El antiguo pilar era circular y fue sustituido por el actual a mediados del siglo XX. De ella existen numerosas menciones en los protocolos notariales del siglo XV, documentos donde aparece siempre mencionada por el nombre de “fuente del pilar de San Francisco”.
Sirvió como abrevadero hasta 1796, fecha en que el corregidor Eguíluz cambió el antiguo pilar por otro de mármol. La fuente costó entonces 5000 reales. La actual taza barroca de mármol azul, procede del patio del antiguo Ayuntamiento y sustituye al pilar circular (que aún se aprecia en fotografías antiguas de mediados del siglo XX), de dimensiones más reducidas para el tamaño de la calle.
Attached to the wall, the fountain is formed by a black stone pediment, rectangular in section and topped with a pinnacle, presided over by a shield of the city carved in marble. In the lower part of the pediment, and on its two sides, there are two yellow brass pipes that pour the water, from two stone hemispheres, onto an oval pillar of 1.90 x 1 m. of dimensions and 85 cm. Tall. The pillar has a flat edge and a domed body, with a widening in its lower part. On both sides of the inner part of the pillar, and coinciding with the fall of the pipes, there are stone platforms to support the pitchers. It has a central drain.
On the pipes and under the coat of arms, in the central part of the pediment, the following inscription can be read: "IN TRANSITE REGIS CAROLI IV CUN REGALI FAMA ANNO 1796. PENALTY OF FOUR DUCADOS TO WHICH BEASTS TIES, FROM BLOWING OR AGAINST THIS FOUNTAIN" .
