Esta fuente ornamental no está exenta de polémica. Mientras unos historiadores afirmaban que es la que originariamente se situó en la Corredera, después en San Pedro y luego terminó en esta plaza, otros piensan que no es tal fuente, sino que aquella quedó desmontada. Si bien es cierto que al describir la fuente se dice que contaba con unas gradas y que esto fue lo que motivó su desmonte, ya que impedía que las bestias bebiesen en ella, lo cierto es que hoy día se asume que ésta era la fuente y que al reubicarla por tercera vez, se eliminó este elemento.
Aunque tipológicamente recuerda a la fuente de la Plaza de la Paja, ésta es más monumental, con las dos exedras centrales en su pilón que hacen que fuera considerada la primera fuente artística de Córdoba, indicando Ortí Belmonte que data del siglo XVII.
It consists of a splendid rectangular pillar of black stone, with semicircular widenings in the central area of both major sides and a slightly inset profile of the minor sides; its plant reaches dimensions of 6 x 4 m. and 65 cm. high parapet. It has two drains located respectively in the northwest and southeast corners of the construction, inside the pillar. The two pilasters for the assortment of water are located at each of its smaller ends; they reach 2.50 m. high and have a square section of 80 cm. sideways at the base and 60 cm. on top; both are topped by Herrerian spiers, and both had inscriptions that have disappeared today.
The original pumps were replaced by new ones in 1982.
